Back to School: Spring Basketball Preview

Back to School: Spring Basketball Preview

Well the spring semester is upon us and as students from across the globe descend upon Williamsburg, Tribal Fever has a few course recommendations for the teams.  So sharpen your pencils, set your cell phone to vibrate, and get ready for Tribal Fever’s selected spring schedule.

ANTH 201:  Intro to Archaeology.  Coach Tony Shaver is hoping to excavate past seasons’ successes down the stretch for the men’s team.  Last season the team won 3 of their final 5 games, including the first round of the CAA tournament.  The year before the team made it all the way to the finals of the tournament and earned an NIT berth.  In 2008, the Tribe reeled off three straight tournament wins before falling to George Mason in the final.  Hopefully this years team can capture some of that lightning in a bottle.

APSC 456:  Random Walks in Biology.  Dana Lotito is the newest addition to Tribe basketball.  She walked onto the women’s team this month but has not accumulated any statistics yet.  Lotito is from Conshohocken, Pennsylvania where she set her high school’s record for field goal percentage at a staggering 61%.  Lotito joins an already successful frontcourt, but can add the element of precision shooting  to Coach Debbie Taylor’s offense.  Welcome to the Tribe, Dana.

CLCV 316:  Greek and Roman Hero:  Voyage of a Hero.  In addition to his Roman name, freshman guard Marcus Thornton has certainly displayed all the hallmarks of the classical hero this season.  Hailed as one of the best recruits in Tribe history, Thornton struggled in his first game with the Tribe, committing seven turnovers against St. John’s.  Since then Thornton has greatly improved, and was named CAA Rookie of the Week on January 9th.  Marcus has slipped of late however, averaging only 5 points against Towson and Northeastern.

BIOL 306:  Microbiology.  Doug Howard is small.  Listed at 5′-9″, he is the smallest player on the team by four inches.  However, Howard has been a consistent contributor for the team this season.  He has seen action in seven games this season, and started against Eastern Kentucky.  Over the course of those games he has amassed six points, two steals, four assists, and even two rebounds.  That already matches his number of steals and rebounds last season and surpasses his assist total from last year.

ART 418:  Advanced Architecture.  With five players over six feet tall, the women’s team very much resembles a city skyline.  6′-3″ Emily Correal is averaging a double-double this season.  Jaclyn McKenna, also 6′-3″, has kept up the scoring pace with over ten points per game.  6′-2″ Kaitlyn Mathieu has had some injury issues this season but has the unique ability of being able to rebound and shoot from range.  While 6′-2″ Victoria Willems and 6′-4″ MacKenzie Morrison have seen very limited action this season, they both add a great amount of depth for the team.

BUAD 531:  Forecasting.  It’s never too late to look forward to next season and the Tribe has managed to already ink four recruits between the two teams.  The men’s team has gotten commitments from Terry Tarpey and Sean Sheldon, while the women’s team has managed to sign Jamie Revels and Brooke Stewart.  Tarpey, a 6′-5″ guard, was born in France but played high school basketball in Connecticut.  Sheldon is a 6′-9″, 215 lb. forward from Michigan and can be a serious inside presence.  Revels is a 6′-1″ forward who earned all city honors in Denver.  Stewart is a 6′-0″ Massachusetts guard who should add some height to the backcourt.
