Fresh Meat with Pam and Anne- #43 Tom Schalk
On January 24, 2012 we had the opportunity to meet up with the freshman forward Tom Schalk. Tom is from Burnsville, Minnesota, where he started playing basketball in kindergarten. Here at the College, Schalk plans on either majoring in Accounting or Finance.
Pam and Anne: What was your biggest accomplishment?
Schalk: My proudest moment was signing with William and Mary, but I’d say my biggest accomplishment was going to our state tournament in my sophomore year [of high school].
Pam and Anne: Did you play any other sports in high school?
Schalk: No I didn’t play any other sports in high school.
Pam and Anne: Where do you draw your inspiration?
Schalk: My AAU (43 hoops basketball) coach pushed me really hard and he taught me a lot about basketball and about life really. He inspired me to be the best I could be.
Pam and Anne: If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you want to play the lead role as you?
Schalk: Brad Pitt because it seems like a lot of girls like him. Yeah, and I’d get Angelina.
Pam and Anne: Favorite TV shows?
Schalk: Entourage. It’s over now but it’s definitely my favorite. Now that it’s done I’d say The Walking Dead.
Pam and Anne: If you could have one superpower what would it be?
Schalk: Super strength for no particular reason just to be strong.
Pam and Anne: Do you have a favorite athlete? Or someone you look up to?
Schalk: Kobe Bryant
Pam and Anne: What do you like to do during your free time?
Schalk: I’m kinda a movie buff.
Pam and Anne: Oh! What’s you’re favorite movie?
Schalk: Oh there’s so many and it changes all the time. Some of my favorites are Pulp Fiction and Dazed and Confused.
Pam and Anne: Is there anything else you like to do?
Schalk: I also like bowling and playing ping pong with friends. My highest score at bowling is 222.
Pam and Anne: What’s the weirdest song on you iPod?
Schalk: Love Game by Lady Gaga. I don’t know why its on there.
Pam and Anne: What are three things you cannot live without?
Schalk: Family and friends, faith (like my Bible), and basketball definitely.
Pam and Anne: What NBA team would you like to play on?
Schalk: Probably the LA Lakers so I could play with Kobe.
Pam and Anne: What is your biggest pet peeve?
Schalk: People that drive too slow.
Being as we’re both under 5’2”, there was no way we could leave the interview without asking Tom how it felt to be so tall (6’8”). To which he replied, “It’s pretty cool haha It’s easy to find people in crowd or stand out in crowd”
If you’re in the area this spring break, make sure to check out Tom Schalk, and the rest of the basketball team on Friday March 2nd, 2012 at 6 pm as they take on the Northeastern Huskies in the Richmond Coliseum for the first round of 2012 CAA Men’s Basketball tournament. The first 50 tickets are free for William and Mary students!
We’d like to thank Tom Schalk for taking the time to sit down and speak with us. Another special thanks to Olivia Blazek for being our scribe during the interview.
