Fresh Meat with Pam and Anne- The W&M “Fab Five”
Yesterday, March 14, 2013, we had the pleasure of interviewing William and Mary’s own “Fab Five”! The Tribe’s Women’s Gymnastics 2013 Freshman Class: Alyssa Glass, Taylor James, Amanda McGee, Caroline Ramirez- Gaston, and Brittany Stover. Alyssa is from Chambersburg, PA, she plans on majoring in Business and is considering studying Public Health, her events are vault, bars, and floor.Taylor is from Santa Clarita, CA and is majoring in Kinesiology with a concentration in Pre-med, she usually competes on beam. Amanda is from Virginia Beach, VA and plans on majoring Education, her events are vault, beam, and floor. Caroline is an International Relations and Government major from Burke, Virginia who primarily competes on floor and beam. Last but not least, Brittany, an “all-arounder” from New Albany, Indiana she plans on majoring in Business.
This year we decided to shake things up a little and let our athletes randomly pick a question from a hat and leave the whole interview up to chance!
Brittany was the first to pick from the hat and the question was…..
“How do you prepare on game day?”
Brittany: From the start to getting into gym we all get into our little bubble and I like to focus in and walk myself through all my routines, and get pumped up and confident for the competition.
Alyssa: I try to treat it like any normal day and not make it a bigger thing. I get pumped up by listening to music and just try to get into my zone and get ready to compete. Nothing too special!
Pam and Anne: Do you have a special song that makes you pumped up?
Alyssa: Not really but I do make a new playlist every year.
Caroline: Before getting to the gym, I usually listen to music and focus on myself. Once I get into the gym I really feed off the energy of my teammates, the environment just gets you really excited and pumped for the meet!
Taylor: I like to make sure I got a lot of sleep the night before. From the start of the day, I like to get into the zone, I like listening to music on the way to gym. My favorite pump up song on meet days is “Lose Yourself” by Eminem.
Amanda: Before the meet, I try not think about it too much during the day and just do whatever I usually do. Once we get into the gym, I also like to listen to music and before the meet everyone just gets really pumped up and excited!
Alyssa picked the next question from the hat:
“ Did you play any other sports in High School?”
Alyssa: I went to boarding school, so I was required to play other sports. I actually played soccer and softball.
Caroline: Mostly gymnastics, but there was one summer when I took off gymnastics, I did swimming just to stay active and because my friend was on swim team.
Amanda: Me neither!
Brittany: I played softball all the way up to my sophomore year of high school.
“ What are 3 things you cannot live without?”
Caroline: Oh wow that’s hard! I couldn’t live without my mom she is my best friend, we get along really well. I tell her everything and she tells me everything. I also couldn’t live without traveling, that’s one of my favorite things to do.
Pam and Anne: Where was the last place you went?
Caroline: The last place was Peru! The third thing I couldn’t live without is COFFEE!!
Taylor: I couldn’t live without my parents, coffee is a big one, and something to do, I always have to be working on something, or I’ll go crazy.
Amanda: I definitely couldn’t live without my family, my friends, and coffee I would die! Haha
Brittany: I also definitely couldn’t live without my family they are so supportive. I definitely couldn’t live without sweets! I also couldn’t live without being active.
Alyssa: I could definitely not live without my family. I am also one of those people that needs to be doing something. And I definitely couldn’t live without my cell phone, I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have it!
“Who’s your favorite athlete/ Who do you look up to?”
Taylor: I look up to my brother a lot, I would say he’s my favorite athlete. He’s on the gymnastics team for University of Michigan and he’s been a huge role model for gymnastics and for school, he’s so smart. He’s the best person ever!
Amanda: I look up to my parents a lot as athletes because they are both marathon runners and they are always both so motivated and active.
Brittany: My favorite athlete is Sean Johnson. I actually got to meet her and she is really sweet. But more so who I look up to two older girls in my gym AJ Mills and Janae Cox. They were the older girls when I was younger and I always aspired to be like them.
Alyssa: One of the girls from my old gym, she was the first one to do College gymnastics, Carrie, and she has been like my older sister, since I was less than 10 years old, I’ve known her my whole life and definitely look up to her.
Caroline: As of recently, I’ve really looked up to one of our co-captains, Jess Pritchard. She is just a really positive person and always brings up the energy. Even if I’m not on a certain event with her, if I just look towards her and ask her to watch me, I know I’ll be OK.
Amanda’s question was:
“If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you want to play the lead role as you?”
Amanda: Oh gosh I would get a question like this haha! I think I might have to say Nicole Kidman.
Caroline: Interesting…. I like that!
Brittany: I’m not so big on actors! I really have no clue!
Alyssa: I really like Rachel McAdams. I think she’s a really good actress and can play any role.
Caroline: I think I would pick Shakira because my hips don’t lie haha! Just kidding! But she loves to dance and I love to dance.
Taylor: I would say Jennifer Aniston because I love her! Or Will Ferrell! I would love to see him in a movie dressing him up as a girl that’d be great!
“What do you like to do with your Free time?”
Amanda: What free time?!
Brittany: I like hanging out with my friends, and I’m also really crafty, so I like to do things like that.
Alyssa: I really like going out with my friends, or going shopping. If I have a lot of free time, I really like reading.
Caroline: I would say, hanging out with my friends or going out to eat somewhere.
Taylor: In my freetime, I like to sleep or like Alyssa, I like to read. I read a book over winter break called, A Visit from the Goon Squad, it was really good!
Amanda: I love shopping! I like hanging out with friends, and reading. I’m trying to read Safe Haven right now.
“What was the best advice you were ever given?”
Alyssa: That’s hard. My dad is always really good about giving me advice. Anytime I’ve ever upset or down he says, even when you’re frustrated in the gym you need to be ready, just always push through and persevere and you will achieve what you want to achieve.
Caroline: The best advice I’ve ever received, I saw on a tv show. Happiness is a choice, and once you actually think about it, it really is, no matter what situation you’re put in, you can choose to be happy.
Taylor: I’m always looking towards the future, trying to make plans. I’m a very busy person, so my mom once told me not to rush through life and to sit back and enjoy it for once.
Amanda: My mom always used to tell me, everything happens for a reason. So when I get really stressed out or anything, I think about that.
Brittany: Enjoy every little moment, because it goes by fast.
“What is the most trouble you have ever gotten into?”
Pam and Anne: Make sure it’s legal haha
Alyssa: I have one! It’s really silly, my sister and I were doing gymnastics in front of our television. She pushed me, and I fell off the mat into our old big screen tv. My butt went into the tv, and I broke it. My parents weren’t very happy about that.
Taylor: Ooo I have one! One time when my brother and I were really little, we were wrestling, at a friends house, and I punched out my brothers too front teeth. But they were baby teeth anyways, it’s not like I damaged him.
Pam and Anne: You were helping him out!
Taylor: Exactly! But he was crying and my mom had to take us home.
Amanda: One time when I was little, in our downstairs bathroom, where you hang the towels, my mom had this rack that was glass and for some reason, I don’t know why, maybe because I had too much energy I was hanging on it, and I broke it. I had to carry it upstairs to show her, and I made my sister carry up half of it because I didn’t want to get in trouble.
Brittany: I may have had a little attitude as a child.
Caroline: I’m going to turn the question around, I was in trouble because I was being chased by monkeys. When I was in Kenya, Africa. It was the scariest moment of my whole life.
Pam and Anne: Did you do anything to them?
Caroline: I pissed them off a little bit. It was Christmas, the hotel put little fruit cakes in everyones room, and my brother thought it would be cool to feed the monkeys, since they were everywhere. While he’s throwing cake everywhere, they started to swarm, so we were stuck inside our room. They were all by are door, and we couldn’t get out. My brother told me to cause a distraction, so I said to this big monkey, “GO! Get out!” the monkey gave me a “are you for real” look, so then it started chasing after me, but I had a big jacket that I threw down, and that stopped them, and I was safe.
Pam and Anne: What a story!
Caroline: And that was after they had stolen are malaria pills, inside our hotel room!
“Coke or Pepsi?”
Pam and Anne: Good choice!
Amanda: I don’t drink either, I like Sprite.
Caroline: Is that a Pepsi product?
Pam and Anne: No, Coke.
Amanda: Ok, then Coke.
Brittany: I’d say Coke.
Alyssa: I’d say Coke too.
Taylor: Really? You drink so many Pepsi Max’s.
Alyssa: Yeah, but I really like cherry coke zero.
Caroline: I can’t decide between Coke Zero and Pepsi Max.
Alyssa: That’s a hard one!
Caroline: I’ll go with Pepsi Max.
“What’s the weirdest song on your iPod?”
Pam and Anne: Or most embarrassing.
Amanda: I don’t know if I have any songs that would be embarrassing. I have no idea! I have a lot of 80s music, but that’s not embarrassing.
Caroline: I’m not embarrassed about this, but I have, I Just Can’t Wait to be King on my party playlist.
Pam and Anne: It’s not a party until the Lion King comes on!
Caroline: Exactly, It’s a good thing to jam too!
Alyssa: I think I still have some High School Musical songs from when I was little
Taylor: I have everything on my iPod! I listen to a lot of screamo music, I have some Elvis, Beach Boys, Bob Marley, everything!
Brittany: I’m pretty sure I have some Hilary Duff!
“Do you have a saying or motto that you live by?”
Brittany: I guess for me, it’s a quote, “If you say you can, you can. If you say you can’t, you won’t” You have to believe you can do it.
Alyssa: I really like the quote from Friday Night Lights, “Clear eyes full hearts can’t lose.” It’s one of my favorites.
Taylor: I don’t really have a saying or a quote that I live by, if anything it would be what my mom told me, just don’t rush through life.
Amanda: Everything happens for a reason.
Caroline: Happiness is a choice.
“If you could have one superpower, what would it be?”
Alyssa: I really wish I could stop time. Pause and just play around with time, and have the ability to do whatever youwant. Just stop, and be in a moment for longer, or fast forward.
Caroline: I would like to read minds.
Taylor: I would hate that! If I could have any superpower, I wish I could have the power to eat all the food in the world, and not get fat!
Amanda: That’s a good one! I think I would like to be able to fly.
Brittany: I think, I would want the power to be invisible, so I could sneak up on people.
Caroline: You’d use your power for evil!
“How did you get started with gymnastics?”
Caroline: My parents put me in gymnastics because I was a crazy child, cartwheeling all over and climbing out my crib. I started when I was four.
Taylor: My parents put my brother in gymnastics first because he had too much energy, and they put me in since they were taking him into the gym anyways. They started me in gymnastics when I was four, but I didn’t start competitive gymnastics till I was 10.
Amanda: My mom put me in the mommy and me classes when I was two-years-old, just because I was so crazy. I would hang onto the trapeze bar on the playground without my arms, I scared her!
Brittany: My grandparents started my older sister when she was three, and my siblings and I just followed that. I’ve been basically been in gymnastics since I could walk, I’m pushing 18 years now!
Alyssa: I’m similar to Caroline, my parents were frustrated with how much energy I had, so they took me to the gym when I was three, I’ve been doing it for 16 years!
“Favorite TV Show?”
Taylor: Easy! The Office.
Caroline: Even more than friends?!
Taylor: Yes, The Office… I live by The Office!
Amanda: I can’t pick! I really like Grey’s Anatomy!
Brittany:I’ve been a diehard Grey’s Anatomy fan, I love all the scandals
Alyssa: I like The Vampire Diaries
Caroline: I’m a Spongebob fan. Hardcore!
“What would be your ultimate achievement?”
Amanda: I’d have to say winning vault at regionals. It was really exciting!
Brittany:Mine would probably be, my senior year, when I placed 10th at nationals
Alyssa: Getting 5th on Bars and 5th on Floor at regionals last year. It was a big accomplishment for me.
Caroline: I would say, getting into this school without athletic help.
Taylor: Being a part of this team.
