Towel Man, the Man, the Myth, the Legend

By Robert VanGundy

Towel Man first emerged in the 1980s at William and Mary Men’s basketball games. During one of the most successful periods in the program, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity showed up in force in white T-shirts and had a member lead the T-R-I-B-E cheer. Over the next 20 years or so, the cheer fell out of fashion.

Amidst the very successful 2009-2010 basketball season Tribe Fan legend Chase Hathaway took up the mantle as Towel Man and led the cheer at the near sell-out game against ODU in Kaplan Arena. Though the Tribe lost a heartbreaker by 3 points, the tradition of Towel Man was revived. Chase led the crowd for the rest of the season, through the CAA Tournament Championship Game and in the second ever post season game for the Tribe in a tough NIT loss at basketball powerhouse UNC.

During senior night a brief Passing of the Towel ceremony took place and at the conclusion of the basketball season, freshman Robert VanGundy took the helm of Towel-Man. Appearing at a few baseball games that year, he rallied the home crowd, and honed his craft. During the next year, Towel Man appeared at Volleyball, Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, and Baseball, helping lead the home crowd in cheering on the Tribe’s student athletes. It was more the same in the 2011-2012, Towel Man returned in high spirits ready to cheer on the Tribe.
