#19 Tribe to take on Richmond for 70th Annual Capital Cup

This Saturday, the #19 Tribe football team (7-4, 4-3) will travel to Robins Stadium to take on the Richmond Spiders (5-6, 3-4) in the regular season finale, and in the 70th annual Capital Cup Championship Game. This game will be the 123rd meeting between the Tribe and the Spiders. Dating back to 1898, Richmond vs. William & Mary is the oldest rivalry in the South. The Tribe has won two of the last three Capital Cups against the Spiders but, last year, the W&M lost 21-14 to CAA Co-champion Spiders.

“Obviously, there’s a lot at stake for this game, but we’ve had some big games with Richmond in the past, and I’m sure this will be another one,” said head coach Jimmy Laycock about the Tribe’s rivalry with Richmond. The Tribe leads the all-time series 61-56-5.

This game also is the Tribe’s last chance to make the NCAA Playoffs. It’s pretty simple from here on: win, and they’re most likely in. Lose, and it will make for a very painstaking Selection Sunday.

The Tribe is coming off a heartbreaking 15-9 loss to #7 Towson, in which the Tribe was just outplayed. Towson’s offense ran for 342 yards, and the Tribe’s offense was held to just 275. The loss to Towson snapped a three-game winning streak for the Tribe. All three of those wins were against teams ranked in The Sports Network Top 25. Had the Tribe won, they would have already clinched a spot in the NCAA Playoffs.

Richmond is well out of playoff contention, but they are currently playing their best football of the season. They’ve won their past three games, in which they averaged 538.6 offensive yards per game. In their last game, the Spiders gained a whopping 680 yards to defeat then-ranked #21 Delaware 46-43. Spiders QB Michael Strauss completed 35 of 46 passes, and threw for a school record 543 yards and five touchdowns.

The game will begin at 4:00 p.m. The Tribal Fever will be taking a fan bus to the game. Tickets cost $31.00. The bus will be leaving from the Kaplan Arena parking lot at 2:00, and will leave the stadium half an hour after the conclusion of the game.

Tickets to the game can be purchased through The game can be watched through SpiderTV. The game can be listened to through TribeAthleticsTV, 92.3 The Tide FM, and 107.9 Bach FM. Live stats are also available.
